What. A. Day. Our very first Owls OD Championship Singles went down at Kearney Road, Christchurch, and it was an absolute blast! Thirty players hit the mats, and from the first bowl to the last, the vibe was on point with music pumping, raffles rolling, banter flying, and some seriously sharp bowls being played.
After the qualifying rounds, the top 16 went into knockout mode. Every game brought big moments, but the final between Simon Thomas and Ashleigh Tanfield was next-level, tense, skill-packed, and down-to-the-wire. Simon came out on top, but it was one of those matches where both players walked away as legends.
And of course… the moment of the day? The jack that decided it had seen enough and rolled across five other mats before anyone could stop it. Instant classic.

The 75th New Zealand Indoor Bowls Championships have wrapped up, and what a week it’s been! The Otautahi Owls were proudly represented on and off the mats, and the feedback on our club’s initiatives and uniforms has blown us away, well beyond anything we expected.
Throughout the week, our presence was strong, and we want to give a special shoutout to some standout performances:
🌟Angela Stone and Jeff Stuart represented Canterbury in the prestigious North vs South Academy Match, you both did us proud!
👏Darryl Gallagher, reserve for the team, was an outstanding support both on the sidelines and in the stands.
🎯Jeff Stuart made it to the semi-finals in the Triples, an awesome achievement!
🎯Simon Thomas reached the quarter-finals in the Singles, great effort!
🎯Dave Woods reached the quarter-finals in the Fours, well done!
🎯James Sullivan and Emma Sullivan won the trophy for Husband and Wife going the furthest in the Pairs.
🫸Tony Cook for volunteering his time to umpire a few rounds, this was awesome as Tony traveled down to do this role, this was appreciated as umpires were short on numbers. Thanks Tony!
A huge thanks to Ashburton & NZIB for hosting a fantastic week, despite the chilly weather, the hospitality and spirit were top-notch. To all the Owls who played throughout the week well done! It was incredible to see our club out there.
We’re proud to announce that three of our Owls have been selected to represent the South Island Team in the upcoming clash against the North Island in Balclutha this August:
👏Simon Thomas – Men’s Singles
👏Kylie Gould – Skip of the Ladies Triples
👏Julie Thomas – Two of the Ladies Triples
Congratulations to you all!
